As of today, the three teams with the best winning percentage in Major League Baseball (MLB) all play in the American League (AL) East Division: New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and Boston Red Sox. This fact leads me to question whether or not the current playoff system in Major League Baseball is fair.
In the current MLB playoff system, each league's divisional winners make the playoffs along with the team with the best record which didn't win their division. If the current win to loss ratios stand at the end of the regular season, the team with the third best record in the AL will not make the playoffs while two teams with lesser records will make the playoffs. Is that fair?
I think a fairer playoff system would have the four teams with the best record in each league make the playoffs regardless of the division in which they are bracketed. What do you think?
